The Gift of the Magi

THE GIFT OF THE MAGI, BY O. HENRY

1) Comment on the meaning of the following sentence in the fifth paragraph of the story: “She stood by the window and looked out dully at a grey cat walking a grey fence in a grey backyard.”

2) What subtle clues are in the story that point towards the sort of person Jim actually is?

As for the meaning of " looking dully at the grey cat on the grey fence in the grey backyard" I think it brings us into the story and paints a great picture of the sadness Della was feeling, the hopelessness of not being able to save enough to buy Jim a gift worthy of her opinion of him.
As for Jim, his personality is shown by how he didn't get angry when he realized he had sold his prized possession to get Della a gift that she couldn't use, by the fact that a watch was his greatest treasure because it had been owned by his father and grandfather, the idealism by the use of his full name on the nameplate.
I love O'Henry stories. Great one.
